Ranunculus aconitifolius ‘Flore Pleno’ AGMKnown as Fair Maids of France, originating in the moist mountain meadows and open woodland of Central Europe. A truly superb plant with double white flowers on attractive branching stems to 60cm (2ft) or more high.
Ranunculus acris subsp. citrinusThis pale-flowered form of our native Meadow Buttercup has a subtle beauty and charm. Its flowers are freely produced in May to June, on stems 30-60cm (1-2ft) tall, each individual flower of the palest shining lemon-yellow. Do not allow to self sow otherwise the resultant seedlings will be a mix of predominately typical yellow flowers with only the odd pale yellow thrown in. A moisture-retentive soil is best.
Ranunculus ficaria flore-plenoPossibly the best of the double flowered varieties, with nicely restrained foliage adorned with delicate pale green to silver dappling and tight rosettes of double yellow flowers.
Ranunculus ficaria ‘Brazen Hussy’Ranunculus ficaria species (Lesser Celandines), flower in late winter and early spring and are invaluable for their bright flowers, which open and shine in the sunlight. One of their good characteristics is the habit of dying back to their tuberous rootstock at the end of spring to make way for other perennials. 10-15cm (4-6”) high. This variety is grown for its striking bronzed, near black foliage that contrasts wonderfully with the bright, sulphurous-yellow flowers.

Rhodiola rosea Roseroot.A clump forming perennial, suitable for the rock garden or herbaceous border and cultivated for its glaucous foliage and bright yellow starry flowers. 30cm (12”).
Rhynchospora colorata White-top SedgeAn attractive perennial sedge, which during summer sends up inflorescences with a top knot of white bracts, centred with a small bunch of white flowers; throughout the rest of the year it has polished green leaves. Can be grown on a pool margin or in smaller water features. For extra protection lower the plant down below ice level in winter. 45cm (18”) high.
Rodgeria pinnata ‘Superba’ AGMAttractive bold, bronzed foliage and rosy flower heads in summer. 90-120cm (3-4ft) in height.
Rodgersia podophylla AGMA statuesque and handsome foliage plant, producing large heavily corrugated foliage in spring, at the time it is reddish-purple in colour changing by mid season to a strong green before ending the season with a spectacular display of autumnal tones. During midsummer it adds to the display by producing tall spikes of creamy-green, star-shaped flowers appearing well above the foliage. 75cm (30”).
Rodgersia ‘Species from Tibet’A wild collected plant, the new growth is a wonderful rich cinnamon-brown colour which is followed later in the year by tall, elegant creamy flower spikes. 90cm (3ft).
Roscoea auriculataAll our listed Roscoeas thrive in fertile soil in sun or dappled shade. They have a surprisingly long flowering season. This one has rich purple flowers.
