Saturday 15th September 2012. 10.30 - 4pm.
The plant kingdom is hugely varied and it can be very difficult and daunting to start to identify plants for those with little or no experience. In this introductory course we will look at wide variety of plant families and species flowering in late summer. The course will concentrate on the key characters needed for identifying a range of families and recognition of an individual as belonging to a particular family. Useful identification tips will be illustrated with specimens and presentations. You will learn about individual garden flowers and the stories they can tell about their ecology and habitat in the wild and the garden, their uses and the meanings behind their names.
This course will focus on different families and species to those covered in the earlier botany day school, and the course can be done as a follow up to that day school building on previously learnt skills or as a separate class.
The course tutor is Mark Duffell. He has had a lifetime interest in plants both in the garden and in their native habitat. He gained the RHS Diploma in Horticulture and went on to become 'Young Horticulturist of the Year' in 2001. More recently Mark completed an MSc in Biological Recording and Species Identification. He now teaches botanical identification for a variety of organisations including Wildlife Trusts and local recording groups.
