Botany for Gardeners: An Introduction

Saturday 16th June 2012. 10.30am to 4pm.

Botany Day Course for Gardeners: An Introduction

The plant kingdom is hugely varied and it can be very difficult and daunting to start to identify plants for those with little or no experience. In this introductory course we will look at wide variety of plant families and species flowering in early summer. The course will concentrate on the key characters needed for identifying a range of families and recognition of an individual as belonging to a particular family. Useful identification tips will be illustrated with specimens and presentations. You will learn about individual garden flowers and the stories they can tell about their ecology and habitat in the wild and the garden, their uses and the meanings behind their names.

The course will not only introduce gardeners into the wonder of botany but can also help you understand how plants work and how to grow them better. No prior knowledge of botany is required. The only requirements for this course are an enthusiasm for plants.

By the end of the day you will be familiar with a wide range of botanical terminology and be able to place a variety of plants into families.

The course tutor is Mark Duffell. He has had a lifetime interest in plants both in the garden and in their native habitat. He gained the RHS Diploma in Horticulture and went on to become 'Young Horticulturist of the Year' in 2001. More recently Mark completed an MSc in Biological Recording and Species Identification. He now teaches botanical identification for a variety of organisations including Wildlife Trusts and local recording groups.
